The depth to the Gulf of Riga through Lielupi was not deepened. Summer in Latvia 2022.
An unfavorable situation for all yachtsmen arose in Jurmala last year, in the summer of 2021. Leaving with a sailing yacht or a large motor yacht was impossible, because the exit from Lielupe to the Gulf of Riga was covered with sand and the depth in the fairway area dropped to a critical level. Since last summer, the average depth in the fairway was between 70 cm and 1 meter. This depth is not suitable for keel sailing yachts and motor yachts weighing more than 2.5 tons.
In the spring of 2021, Jurmala City Council planned to deepen the passage and restore the operation of the fairway in the same order by August. Funds were allocated for this and a contractor was hired to deepen the depth.
Throughout the summer season, canal restoration work continued, but did not end successfully. The work plan turned out to be much more voluminous and by the end of the season the contractor did not manage to complete the deepening and the contract expired.
Since the washing of the bottom in this section of the Gulf of Riga is a systematic, everyday and natural process, the ship's passage was again washed away with sand during the winter period and there was little left of last year's construction works.
In fact, the condition of the Lielupe passage has returned to its original state, the depth has been washed away with sand, so it is not sufficient and you cannot go there with a yacht.
In the summer of 2022, the Jūrmala City Council plans to look again for new funding and a new contractor.
